Omega-3 boost

Beef + sardine

Rich, flavourful, packed with omega-3s for coat and joints. The dense protein recipe for active dogs and dogs that need anti-inflammatory support.

186 kcal / 100g ~60 min cook Serves 1 week
A bowl of cooked ground beef with diced sweet potato, broccoli, kale and sardines
Why this recipe

The recipe for shiny coats and supple joints.

Beef brings iron and dense calories. Sardine brings omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) which are clinically shown to support coat shine, skin health, and joint function. Combined, this is the highest-impact recipe for dogs needing more energy or facing chronic inflammation, stiffness, or skin issues.

Best for active dogs, working breeds, dogs with arthritis or stiffness, and dogs with dull coats or dry skin. The energy density is higher than chicken — adjust portions accordingly.

Ingredients

Heads up: all ingredient weights below are raw — what you buy and cook. Cooking and draining shrinks the batch, so the cooked amount you feed (shown in the scaler) is less than the total raw weight.

Pick how many days you’re cooking for below — the quantities scale to your dog’s daily portion. Use the scaled shopping list calculator for exact quantities.

Sardines do triple duty: preformed EPA/DHA, vitamin D, and bioavailable calcium from the soft bones. Beef heart was removed from the original (rarely supermarket-stocked) — the premix delivers the taurine. Optional: 25g of beef liver from the butcher adds vitamin A and B12 margin; the recipe is fully complete without it.

How to cook it

  1. Brown the mince in a dry non-stick pan breaking it up as it cooks, 8–10 minutes. Drain any heavily pooled fat.
  2. Add the cubed sweet potato, carrot and broccoli with a small amount of water, cover, and steam-cook 8 minutes until tender.
  3. Stir the kale or spinach through and let it wilt in the residual heat.
  4. Flake the drained sardines into the mixture along with the ginger and salt.
  5. Cool to warm (not hot — heat destroys some vitamins).
  6. Stir in the premix and olive oil until evenly mixed.
  7. Portion into daily containers. Refrigerate up to 4 days, freeze the rest.
Talk to your vet first if: Your dog has pancreatitis history (higher fat content), heart conditions on sodium-restricted diet, or known beef/fish allergies.

Swaps & substitutions

Same-weight swaps that keep the recipe balanced. Do not swap the protein — each recipe's premix dose and fat balance is calibrated to its specific meat.

Sweet potatobutternut squash, pumpkin, or parsnip — same weight (170 g)
Broccolicauliflower or cabbage — same weight (60 g)
Kalebaby spinach or silverbeet — same weight (30 g)
Olive oilavocado oil — same volume (5 mL). Not coconut oil.
Sardineskeep as-is — they carry food-source omega-3, vitamin D and calcium. Use only sardines in spring water (not oil or brine).

Oils: measure in mL and stir into cooled food with the premix — never while hot (heat damages the omega-3 and the fat-soluble vitamins).

⚠ Never add these — toxic to dogs

Onion, garlic, leek, shallot, chives · grapes, raisins, sultanas · chocolate & cocoa · xylitol (in some peanut butters) · macadamia nuts · avocado flesh, skin & pit · cooked bones of any kind · processed/deli meats. These cause serious harm even in small amounts — keep them out of every batch.
