Hypoallergenic

Kangaroo & butternut

Lean. Local. Hypoallergenic. Kangaroo is the cleanest novel protein available in Australia — a true allergy reset for dogs reacting to chicken, beef, or lamb.

Why this recipe

The cleanest protein in Australia.

Kangaroo is naturally lean (under 2% fat), high in iron, and never farmed in pens. Because it has not appeared in commercial dog food until recently, most allergy-prone dogs have never been exposed to it — making it an ideal "novel protein" for elimination diets and dogs reacting to common proteins.

Best for dogs with food allergies, skin reactions, IBD, or chronic itching. Also brilliant for weight management thanks to its low fat content. If your dog is reactive to chicken and beef, this is the recipe to start with.

Ingredients

Heads up: all ingredient weights below are raw — what you buy and cook. Cooking and draining shrinks the batch, so the cooked amount you feed (shown in the scaler) is less than the total raw weight.

Kangaroo at ~2% fat is the leanest mainstream protein available — the full oil dose (1 tbsp olive + 1 tsp flax) is essential for energy density and fatty-acid balance. Naturally high in iron, zinc and conjugated linoleic acid, and often used as a novel protein for dogs with food allergies. The mechanically-deboned meat in the original recipe was the calcium source — the premix handles that now.

How to cook it

  1. Brown the kangaroo mince in a dry pan 6–8 minutes. Kangaroo cooks fast and goes tough if overcooked — pull it off the heat as soon as it loses its pink colour.
  2. Steam the butternut and cauliflower until tender.
  3. Add the cabbage and kale for the last 3 minutes just to soften.
  4. Combine everything and cool to warm (not hot — heat destroys some vitamins).
  5. Stir in the premix, olive oil and flaxseed oil until evenly mixed.
  6. Portion into daily containers. Refrigerate up to 4 days, freeze the rest.
Talk to your vet first if: You are using this for an elimination diet — vets should design and monitor those. Some dogs newly introduced to kangaroo can have loose stools for 2-3 days while adjusting.

Swaps & substitutions

Same-weight swaps that keep the recipe balanced. Do not swap the protein — each recipe's premix dose and fat balance is calibrated to its specific meat.

Butternut squashsweet potato, pumpkin, or parsnip — same weight (200 g)
Green cabbagebroccoli or cauliflower — same weight (60 g)
Cauliflowerbroccoli or cabbage — same weight (50 g)
Kalebaby spinach or silverbeet — same weight (35 g)
Olive oilavocado oil — same volume (15 mL). Not coconut oil.
Flaxseed oilwalnut oil — same volume (5 mL). Or skip it; the premix DHA covers omega-3.

Oils: measure in mL and stir into cooled food with the premix — never while hot (heat damages the omega-3 and the fat-soluble vitamins).

⚠ Never add these — toxic to dogs

Onion, garlic, leek, shallot, chives · grapes, raisins, sultanas · chocolate & cocoa · xylitol (in some peanut butters) · macadamia nuts · avocado flesh, skin & pit · cooked bones of any kind · processed/deli meats. These cause serious harm even in small amounts — keep them out of every batch.
