High energy

Lamb with quinoa

Dense calories for working dogs. Lamb mince brings rich protein and zinc. Quinoa adds complete plant protein, iron, and magnesium for muscle recovery.

Why this recipe

Fuel for athletes and working dogs.

Lamb is calorie-dense and rich in carnitine — which helps the body convert fat into energy. Quinoa is the only plant source of complete protein and adds iron, magnesium, and fibre. Together they make a recipe purpose-built for dogs that need to maintain weight on high activity.

Best for working dogs (Border Collies, Kelpies, Huskies), athletic breeds (Vizslas, Brittanys, Pointers), and dogs that struggle to maintain weight. Also a fantastic novel-protein option for dogs sensitive to chicken or beef.

Ingredients

Heads up: all ingredient weights below are raw — what you buy and cook. Cooking and draining shrinks the batch, so the cooked amount you feed (shown in the scaler) is less than the total raw weight.

Lamb heart, lung and liver were all dropped from the original — lung is virtually unobtainable at supermarkets; heart and liver are butcher-counter only. The premix delivers the taurine (heart) and the vitamin A and B12 (liver). Optional: 25g of lamb liver cooked with the mince adds vitamin A margin. No olive or flaxseed oil — lamb is fatty enough on its own.

How to cook it

  1. Cook the quinoa first per packet (typically 1:2 with water, 15 minutes; 17g dry yields ~50g cooked). Set aside.
  2. Brown the lamb mince in a dry pan and drain the rendered fat thoroughly — lamb sheds significant fat.
  3. Steam the broccoli and cauliflower until tender, then wilt the spinach through.
  4. Combine all cooked ingredients with the quinoa and blueberries. Cool to warm (not hot — heat destroys some vitamins).
  5. Stir in the premix only — no oils needed, lamb has plenty of natural fat.
  6. Portion into daily containers. Refrigerate up to 4 days, freeze the rest.
Talk to your vet first if: Your dog has known lamb allergies, pancreatitis history (lamb is higher fat), or kidney disease.

Swaps & substitutions

Same-weight swaps that keep the recipe balanced. Do not swap the protein — each recipe's premix dose and fat balance is calibrated to its specific meat.
