Kangaroo is one of the leanest meats you can feed a dog — high in protein, iron, zinc and B12, and a novel protein that's often the first pick for dogs with food sensitivities. Two catches: it's so lean it needs added fat to be a complete meal, and pet-grade roo mince is often preserved with sulphites, which destroy vitamin B1. Buy human-grade. Our free kangaroo recipe handles the balancing.
I'm Teddy. Kangaroo is the most Australian thing in my bowl, and honestly one of the smartest. Here's the full picture — what makes roo genuinely excellent for dogs, the two traps nobody mentions, and how to cook it properly.
Why kangaroo works so well for dogs
It's extraordinarily lean. Wild-harvested kangaroo runs at roughly 2% fat — leaner than chicken breast — with a high protein content. For dogs that gain weight easily, or plush dogs working back to condition, that's a gift: more food volume per calorie. (It's why our kangaroo recipe sits at 130 kcal per 100 g cooked — the gentlest energy density of our five.)
It's a novel protein. Most Australian dogs have eaten chicken and beef their whole lives, and food sensitivities develop to proteins a dog has met before. Kangaroo is the protein most dogs have never met — which is why it's so often the starting point for elimination diets and itchy, sensitive dogs. (If you're investigating a suspected allergy, do it with your vet — a proper elimination trial has rules.)
It's nutrient-dense. Rich in iron, zinc and B12, like other red meats but without the saturated fat load. And being wild-harvested under quota rather than farmed, it's often the lowest-footprint red meat available in Australia.
The two traps
Trap one: pet-grade roo mince. The cheap "pet mince" in the pet-food fridge is often preserved with sulphite preservatives, and sulphites destroy thiamine (vitamin B1) — prolonged feeding of sulphite-preserved meat can cause serious thiamine deficiency in dogs and cats. The fix is simple: buy human-grade kangaroo from the supermarket meat aisle (mince, fillet or steak), not the pet fridge. If it's good enough for your plate, it's safe for the bowl.
Trap two: too lean to feed alone. Roo is so low in fat that "just roo and veg" leaves a dog short on essential fatty acids and calories. That's not a flaw, it's a formulation job: our kangaroo recipe adds measured olive and flaxseed oil to bring the fat profile up to where it needs to be — and the premix carries the omega-3 (DHA) on top.
How to cook it
Gently. Lean meat overcooks fast and goes dry and crumbly — brown the mince over medium heat just until cooked through, no seasoning, no onion, no garlic (see the toxic foods list). Same food-safety rules as any meat: cook it properly, cool it fast, fridge for up to 4 days or freeze in daily portions. Full step-by-step, gram weights and the day-scaler are on the recipe page.
How much kangaroo food per day?
Because the recipe is light (130 kcal/100 g), portions look generous: roughly 255 g a day for a 5 kg dog, 430 g for 10 kg, 585 g for 15 kg — the full chart and the formula live in the feeding guide, and the calculator personalises it.
Quick answers
Is kangaroo good for dogs with allergies?
It's one of the best starting points, because most dogs have never eaten it — sensitivities form to familiar proteins. For a suspected food allergy, run a proper elimination trial with your vet rather than guessing.
Can my dog eat kangaroo every day?
As a balanced recipe, yes — though rotating two or three proteins across the week gives broader micronutrient coverage. As plain roo mince alone, no: it's too lean and incomplete on its own.
Why not just buy the cheap pet mince?
Because pet-grade roo is frequently preserved with sulphites, which destroy vitamin B1 — a serious deficiency risk with ongoing feeding. Human-grade kangaroo from the meat aisle avoids the problem entirely.
Can puppies have the kangaroo recipe?
Not this one — our recipes are formulated for healthy adult dogs at maintenance. Puppies need different energy and calcium-phosphorus levels (here's why).
